Kenyan Author, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, dies at 87

One of Africa’s foremost novelists, scholars and writers, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, has been declared dead.
The news of the Kenyan author’s death was made public by his daughter, Wanjiku Wa Ngugi, in a post shared on her Facebook page on Wednesday.
According to the bereaved daughter, the author died early Wednesday with a last wish that his life and work should be celebrated.
She wrote, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o this Wednesday morning, 28th May 2025. He lived a full life, fought a good fight. As was his last wish, let’s celebrate his life and his work. Rîa ratha na rîa thŭa. Tŭrî aira!”
Wanjiku Wa added that “the family’s spokesperson Nducu Wa Ngugi will announce details of his celebration of life soon. Njoki Wa Ngugi Ngina Kiarie Tee Ngugi Kay Ngugi Björn”.
