Killing of 43 rice farmers: PDP tasks Buhari on Security

...Condemns detonation of explosives in Wike father's church

Following the ugly killings of 43 rice farmers by Boko Haram in Borno state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Sunday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently overhaul the national security for  better services.

In a press release by the National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party condemned the killing of the innocent Nigerians, describing it as an act of extreme wickedness and evil.

The party said the President must urgently address the security situation which has become bearable for Nigerians.

Similarly, The Party has also called for a comprehensive investigation into the  explosion that rocked the Christian Universal Church, Port Harcourt, River State capital, presided over by father of Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike.
Ologbondiyan said the main reason for the explosion was to target close associates of Governor Wike, especially his father, not necessarily the worshippers.
“The PDP is particularly disturbed because of the failure of the Buhari Presidency to take decisive action despite series of concerns raised by Borno state governor, Baba Gana Zulum, of security compromises in the state.

“The Buhari administration appears helpless while our national security structure under President Buhari seems to have collapsed. Our nation appears to be on auto pilot with no one in charge while the ship of state continues to drift.

“All our nation gets from the Buhari Presidency is that ‘Mr. President is shocked’, ‘Mr. President is saddened’, ‘Mr. President regrets’ and such lame responses, without any decisive policy direction or directive to definitively tackle the situation at hand, leading to escalation of killings in our country.

“Such attitude by the Buhari administration has continued to embolden insurgents to the extent that they now attack military formations, convoys of state governors and engage in wanton beheading of our compatriots,” PDP said.

“Mr. President should immediately move to Zabarmari in Borno state, empathize with the families of the victims and lead from the front in restoring security in the area.

“Our party commiserates with the government and people of Borno state and urge Nigerians to remain at alert particularly in providing useful information for our security agencies in this fight against insurgency in our land,” PDP said.

On the detonation  of explosives  in Port Harcourt , the  party said : The PDP is disturbed by the intentions of the attackers in detonating an explosive in a religious place particularly given the large number of persons that usually gather at such places.

“While we demand a thorough investigation into the attack as well as prosecution of all those involved, we hold, as a party, that the time has come, more than ever in our contemporary history, for the amendment of our extant laws to allow state governors to be in charge of the security of their respective states.

“We restate our call for the amendment of relevant sections of the 1999 constitution (as emended) to allow states more control of security issues in their respective domains.

“Our party however commends the people of Rivers state for their alertness, which led to the arrest of the attackers. Such courageous act by the people also points to the need to allow greater participation of communities and state governments in the handling of security issues in their environment,” PDP said.
