Labourer bags 15 months imprisonment for stabbing woman

An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Thursday sentenced a labourer, Nuru Adamu, to 15 months imprisonment for stabbing a woman.

The Judge, Mr Sani Umar, sentenced Adamu, who pleaded guilty to four counts of criminal conspiracy, trespass, causing grievous hurt and theft.

Umar, however, gave the convict an option to pay an N20,000 fine for the offence of criminal conspiracy or three months imprisonment in default, a fine of N30,000 for criminal trespass or three months imprisonment.

He also ordered the convict to pay N50,000 or in default, serve a jail term of five months and a fine of N40,000 for the offence of theft,

The judge also awarded N270,000 in damages to the victim.

‘The court gave the convict an option of fine because he is a first-time offender who showed remorse and pleaded for leniency,” he said.

The judge said that the offence had become rampant in the area and hoped that Adamu’s sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Abdullahi Tanko, told the court that the complainant, Blessing Ivo, of Angwan Tiv Gwagwalada, FCT, reported the matter at the police station in April 25.

Tanko said the convict stole the complainant’s Itel phone valued at N30,000 and a cash sum of N4,500 and in the process stabbed her in four different places.
