Lagos announces three-day traffic diversion for independence bridge repairs

Motorists in Lagos have been warned to prepare for traffic disruptions as repair works on Independence Bridge are scheduled to take place from Friday, October 16, to Sunday, October 18, 2026.

The Lagos State Government announced the diversion on Thursday, saying the Federal Ministry of Works would carry out urgent asphalt repairs on the bridge linking parts of Lagos Island.

In a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the government said the work would take place on both the inbound and outbound lanes, with partial closures introduced to allow repairs while maintaining some vehicular movement.

The asphalt works are scheduled to begin on Friday night and continue throughout Saturday and Sunday, with completion expected by the end of Sunday.

Under the traffic management plan, one lane will remain open at a time on each affected section to enable motorists to access their destinations while the repairs are ongoing.

The government advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time and consider alternative routes to avoid delays.

It also confirmed that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority would be deployed to manage traffic and minimise disruption.

“Motorists are implored to remain patient, obey traffic laws, and cooperate fully with the interventions made available,” the statement said.

The repair exercise is expected to affect traffic flow around Lagos Island during the three-day period, particularly as work will continue through the weekend.

The government urged road users to comply with traffic instructions and cooperate with officials deployed to manage the diversion.
