Lagos launches crackdown on street begging, arrests suspects

The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, noting that the arrested individuals will be profiled and handed over to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.

Wahab emphasised the state’s commitment to restoring order, safety, and cleanliness in public spaces.

“We have resumed enforcement operations and arrests of beggars and other individuals constituting nuisance along Ketu-Alapere and adjoining areas,” he said.

The operation aims to address the growing concern of street begging and its impact on public safety and environmental order. While acknowledging the social complexities surrounding the issue, Wahab stressed that the state cannot allow such activities to compromise the well-being of its citizens.

“We understand the social dimensions of street begging, but the state cannot allow actions that compromise public safety or environmental order,” he said.

The commissioner called on residents to join forces with the government in maintaining a clean and safe Lagos. “Together, we will maintain the vision of a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos,” he added.
