Lagos prioritises housing estate maintenance, sustainability

The Lagos State Government has said the maintenance and sustainability of its housing estates have become a top priority to protect public investment and ensure residents enjoy quality living conditions.
Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, stated this during the ministry’s two-day annual management retreat held between February 12 and 13 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He said the Sanwo-Olu administration had made significant investments in housing infrastructure and facility management systems, stressing the need to preserve them for long-term value.
According to him, “The maintenance of state-owned housing estates and entrenching sustainability ethics in infrastructure management is a top priority to ensure investment in real estate is well protected for maximum value.”
Akinderu-Fatai added that the retreat, themed “Enhancing Service Delivery for Sustainable Housing Development and Management,” was aimed at strengthening staff capacity and improving operational effectiveness.
“Deepening the capacity of the management staff is a strategy to improve operational effectiveness, reinforce leadership efficiency as well as ensure performance-driven engagement,” he said.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, said the government remained committed to providing affordable and quality housing for residents.
He disclosed that the ministry would commission four new housing estates before the end of 2026 as part of efforts to expand access to decent homes.
Toriola attributed the ministry’s achievements to the support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and emphasised the need for continuous staff development, innovation and improved coordination.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, urged directors and senior officials to utilise the retreat to gain knowledge that would enhance their performance and service delivery.
In his goodwill message, Ogun State Commissioner for Urban and Physical Planning, Tunji Odunlami, commended Lagos State’s housing initiatives and stressed the importance of collaboration and public-private partnerships in addressing housing challenges.
Also speaking, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Sam Egube, highlighted the critical role of the private sector in driving housing development and called for policies that would encourage investment in the sector.
The retreat featured strategic sessions, performance reviews and discussions aimed at strengthening sustainable housing development and improving service delivery in Lagos State.
