Late-night fire claims 20 lives in Kano

The Kano State Fire Service spokesman, Saminu Abdullahi has confirmed the death of 20 people following a late-night fire in the Sheka area of the state.

He lamented that the victims were burnt beyond recognition.

In a statement, the state Fire Service spokesman expressed regret that another fire incident in Kano Municipal, also claimed the life of a 35-year-old mother and her three-year-old son while they were asleep.

Saminu Abdullahi explained that the second fire incident occurred at Gandun Albasa-Bala Barodo in Kano Municipal Local Government Area.

In the statement, the service received a distress call from one Ibrahim Ashiru that a five-room bungalow had been razed by fire.

It further explained that 20 sheep and eight-grain silos were also burnt to ashes in Kunchi Local Government Area of the state.

The statement said, “When the firefighters arrived at the scene, they rescued the victims’ unconscious and handed them over to one Inspector Shehu Lawan of Kwali Police Station, who rushed them to the Murtala Hospital, Kano, only to be confirmed dead on arrival by the doctors on duty.”

The spokesman cautioned residents in the community to be careful in handling inflammable materials.
