Leaders’ greed, selfishness, injustice, bane of Nigeria’s development – Don

Prof Hafiz Oladosu, of the Department of Arabic Studies, University of Ibadan, has identified greed, selfishness and injustice, on the part of some of the nation’s leaders, as obstacles to the country’s development.

Oladosu stated this in Ibadan, on Wednesday, at the 7th annual Ramadan lecture, sponsored by the Oyo State Governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, with the theme: “Unity in Diversity: an Islamic perspective.”

He said that the identified factors would not allow the country to progress if left unchecked, especially given the fact that the several challenges facing the country were as a result of the failure of both the rulers and the ruled, to live up to their responsibilities.

He urged those in leadership positions to rule with the fear of God and thrive to do only what pleases their creator.

The don also urged the citizens to play positive roles in the nation’s development, while commending Makinde for the laudable achievements recorded in the state within his two years in office.

He charged the governor to continue the good work, and called on residents of the state to support the state government’s efforts of making the state clean and habitable.

In his remarks, Makinde said he organised the annual Ramadan lecture to avail people the opportunity of impacting spiritual knowledge during the holy month.

He said that the prayers of the Muslim clerics would continue to make Oyo state peaceful and safe, urging them to continue praying for his government.

The governor also promised that his administration would continue to do what is right and needful for the people of the state, pledging to complete some of the projects abandoned by the previous state administration.

The Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan; former Governor of Oyo State – Sen. Rashidi Ladoja; the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states – Alhaji Daud Makanjuola; and Chief Imam of Ibadanland -Sheik Abdul Ganiy Agbotomokekere, were among dignitaries at the occasion.
