Mauritius declares “war” against COVID-19

Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth on Sunday launched a national awareness campaign against COVID-19, under the slogan ‘One people against Covid’, at the sports complex of Côte-d ‘Or in the east of the island.

Mr. Jugnauth recalled the importance of the precautions to be taken — prevention practices such as the proper wearing of a mask, physical distancing and the use of hydro-alcoholic gel  — so that the island is protected from a new resurgence of the pandemic.

He called on “every Mauritian to become a soldier to fight the invisible and formidable enemy that is the COVID-19”.

According to him, “neither an improvement in the health situation nor the protection provided by vaccines should give way to relaxation.”

He said that the vaccination campaign will be accelerated, thanks to vaccines recently purchased from China.

The Prime Minister said that the government is doing its best to procure safe and effective vaccines as “our goal is to vaccinate at least 60% of the population at a time when production is not sufficient to meet global demand.”

He called for the resumption of economic activities in all sectors on the island, underlining: “We must do everything to be able to reopen our borders as soon as possible without compromising public health.”

For its part, the Ministry of Health and Welfare has indicated that the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Mauritius has been 1,294 since March 2020. To date, 571 patients are considered to have been cured in Mauritius.
