
A medical doctor, Godwin Udo, has been abducted by suspected kidnappers in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital.
Dr. Udo, a staff with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital UCTH, was kidnapped on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at his residence in Bateba street about 7:pm.
The whereabouts of the kidnapped medical practitioner is still uncertain but family sources said the abductors called at about 2:00am yesterday morning and demanded for seven million Naira as ransom.
Kidnappers have in recent time launched an assault on residents of the state and scores of people have been kidnapped and for ransom.
Medical personnel in the state have been at the receiving end of insecurity and had resolved to down tools in the state whenever their colleague or relative is kidnapped.
With the latest development, the state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, are said to be getting ready to down tools again until their colleague is released unconditionally.
Sources close to NMA leadership, disclosed that the association may not call off the strike this time in a hurry until the Bill on Death Sentence on Kidnappers is assented to by the state governor.
Besides Udo, other victims who have been abducted in recent times and released after allegedly paying ransom include Dr. Anthony Egbe, a lecturer with the Cross River State University of Technology, CRUTECH, and Mr. Joe Offiong, a safety department staff of UNICEM.
Others include one Emmanuel Asuquo, Okeke Onukwube, a trader Nsikak Etiene in Calabar South as well as a pediatrician, Dr. Vivien Otu.
Irene Ugbo, the Police Public Relations Officer has confirmed the abduction of the medical practitioner.
She assured the public that the command is on the case and working to apprehend the abductors.
