Messi’less Bayern Munich

It was an unbelievable game as Bayern Munich ruthlessly put 8 past Barcelona during their Champions League quarterfinal in Lisbon on Friday. The goals were provided by Thomas Muller (2), Ivan Perisic (1), Serge Gnabry (1), Joshua Kimich (1), Robert Lewandowski (1). Philippe Coutinho, who was originally a Barcelona player but sent on loan to Bayern Munich, scored the remaining two goals to complete the humiliating demolition of his parent club.

Barcelona was able to get two consolation goals courtesy of David Alaba’s own goal and Luis Suarez goal but it was not enough to trigger a comeback.

The merciless defeat could be partly blamed on Barcelona fielding an ageing time as Messi was 27 when Barcelona won their last Champions league in 2015. And it doesn’t seem feasible that Quique Setién will remain as coach since he, and the Barca board, have continually been accused of wasting Messi’s talent.

On the other hand, Bayern is enjoying their 19th consecutive victory in all competitions, and a 28th game unbeaten and they have now scored 39 goals in nine Champions League outings this season.
