We believe in our quality, Oshoala boasts after Falcons win over Matildas

Nigeria forward, Assisat Oshoala has attributed Super Falcons’ victory over Matildas of Australia in yesterday’s Group B fixture at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and Newzealand to hard work and believing in their ability to excel on the big stage.

Oshoala, who came off the bench in the 63rd minute to replace Uchenna Kanu, found the back of the net in the 72nd minute to fire the nine-time African champions to a 3-1 lead, however, Alanna Kennedy scored an injury-time goal for the Aussies as the encounter ended 3-2.

The Australians went ahead at the dot of the first half with Emily van Egmond connecting Caitlin Foord’s cross from the left flank which left Super Falcons’ goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie with no answer.

Kanu restored parity for the Super Falcons five minutes later as the first half ended 1-1. Osinachi Ohale will however put the Nigerian girls ahead in the 65th minute.

Oshoala’s strike against Australia added to her goals against Sweden in 2015 and South Korea in 2019, make her the first African woman to score at three different World Cup tournaments.

Speaking at the end of the match, Oshoala, who claims not to be fully fit having suffered a knock in the Group B opener against Canada.
“We came to this competition with a lot of belief that we can compete against any team. The team is blessed with quality players and with our determination we’ve been able to prove our worth,” she said vowing to give her all to the country each time is called upon

 

 

Women’s World Cup: Super Falcons beat Australia 3-2

 

“Each tournament I want to make sure I give everything. Fight for my teammates and fight for this badge. This is the best country (Nigeria) in the world,” she boasted.

Super Falcons’ next Group B match will be on July 31 against Ireland and a draw will be enough to secure them a place in the round of 16.
