Court adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s trial in terrorism charges indefinitely

By Deborah Onyofufeke
The Federal High Court Abuja, on Monday, indefinitely adjourned the trial in the terrorism charges brought against the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, by the Federal Government.

Kanu, who was absent from his trial today, refused to appear before the Court, in protest against the Federal Government’s refusal to obey the Court of Appeal judgment that ordered his release from detention.

Justice Binta Nyako, adjourned the trial indefinitely on the grounds that the IPOB leader has a pending resolution on the Federal Government’s appeal against the October 13 judgment of the Court of Appeal that discharged him from the terrorism charges.

As the Federal Government’s appeal seeking a reversal of the Court of Appeal judgment is pending before the Supreme Court.

Two other cases billed for hearing before the court were also put off indefinitely for the same reason.

Kanu’s refusal to honour the high court and make an appearance today was conveyed to Justice Nyako by the Federal Government counsel, Mr Mohammed Abubakar.

He informed the court that all entreaties made to persuade him to have a change of heart were rebuffed.

Kanu was said to have stood his ground not to appear in court until the October 13 judgment of the Court of Appeal is respected and obeyed by releasing him from the custody of the Department of the State Service DSS in Abuja.
