Senator Dino Melaye has lambasted the All Progressives Congress (APC) lead government of President Muhammadu Buhari saying that the government had lost sense of direction.

The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District during the 8th Nigerian National Assembly reacting to the government’s plan to pay 40 million Nigerians N5,000 as palliative, to cushion the effect of transport as she proposed to increase petrol price which could cost as much as N340 from February 2022 said that N5,000 multiply by 40 million Nigerians is about N200 billion every month and N200 billion multiply by 12 that brings it to N2.4 trillion every month.

He also said that what the government need to fund subsidy is about N1.8 trillion hence the N5,000 as palliative is not justifiable.

Senator Melaye, who asked the APC government to look for more innovative intellectual strategies to solve the challenges facing the nation, also said that the hypocrisy in the APC government is too enormous.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja, at the presentation of the World Bank Nigeria Development Update, November 2021 edition titled “Time for Business Unusual” the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Malam Mele Kyari, had announced that petrol could cost as much as N340 from February 2022.

Mrs Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, on her, own part said that ahead of the target date of mid-2022 for the complete elimination of fuel subsidies, the Federal Government was working to cushion the impact on Nigerians.

“We are working with our partners on measures to cushion potential negative impact of the removal of the subsidies on the most vulnerable at the bottom 40 per cent of the population.

“One of such measures would be to institute a monthly transport subsidy in the form of cash transfer of N5,000 to between 30 to 40 million deserving Nigerians.
