Tension has mounted in parts of Anambra state amid campaign rallies by various political parties to market their candidates ahead of the November 6th Governorship election peak in the state.
This is as gunmen have reportedly attacked the Governorship campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress in the commercial town of Nnewi, Anambra State.
Also, three persons have been shot dead by gunmen and three vehicles burnt during an evening attack on members of the public at Afor Nnobi Market on Sunday.
The Gunmen during the night attack killed one Johnbosco Ojokwu ‘m’ 33yrs, Rapuluchukwu Ugoeze ‘m’ 30yrs and Chukwuemeka Nwokebagu ‘m’ 31yrs.
Several people sustained serious gunshot injuries when the hoodlums struck the market.
They also set ablaze one shuttle bus, one Toyota Sienna, and a Toyota Hilux.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Tony Olofu on Monday described as unfortunate the attack on some persons at Afor Nnobi Market and urges those with useful information to aid the ongoing investigation to please come forward.
Already, the command has detailed Police Crack Team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police to the troubled area at Nnobi community for an on-the-spot assessment.
It was learnt that yet to be identified gunmen, had violently attacked an unsuspecting member of the public at about 7:40pm on Sunday 26/09/2021 along for, Nnobi Market.
ThisNigeria learned that the attackers had swooped and killed a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose identity could not be ascertained as of press time this report.
Besides, several others were wounded during the attack on Sunday evening.
Similarly, it was gathered that a chieftain of the ruling APGA and strong supporter of Prof Charles Soludo, Dr. Omenugha was also attacked in the Idemili area of the state.
The attackers were said to have set his car ablaze in the process.
There have been concerns over the security situation in parts of the state just less than two months after the all-important Governorship election in the state.
Publicity Secretary of the APC in the state Chief Okelo Madukaife when contacted confirmed the incident to newsmen.
He said, “The evening attack has led to the cold death of a committed party official and the hospitalization of many others”
“Our great party regrets the invasion of our party office and attack of members who were gathered for a meeting in Uruagu Ward 3, Nnewi by persons yet unidentified.
He said, “We regret the loss and regard it as one violence too many in an Anambra State that ought to be the safest state in Nigeria if official claims were anything to go by.”
“We speak for the mood in our dear state where similar attacks took place at Afor Nnobi Junction, on the same day killing men of the Vigilante in Alor, Idemili South in transit and call for a total halt.”
“In the time being, we request specific investigation of this Nnewi incident to avoid a bandwagon thought line, as we are leaving all options open.”
“Our party commiserates with the family of the deceased who will be identified in the near future and assure that their loss is our loss and Anambra State loss, but that their son shall not die in vain.
“We acknowledge security in Anambra State as an area that requires serious intervention,” he stated.

He said the team is to identify and apprehend the hoodlums and bring them to book.
He explained that preliminary investigations had revealed that the attackers in a Toyota Sienna vehicle and a shuttle bus had shot and attacked the unsuspecting member on transit along with Afor Nnobi Market.
The victims were rushed to the hospital and later confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty.
They were later identified as one Johnbosco Ojokwu ‘M’ 33yrs, Rapuluchukwu Ugoeze ‘M’ 30yrs and Chukwuemeka Nwokebagu ‘M’ 31yrs.
