Nigerian achieves historic feat with financial engineering Master’s Degree in South Africa

 

A Nigerian scholar, Abdulrazak Abdulrahman Abubakar, has achieved a historic academic milestone by becoming the first and only Nigerian in South Africa to graduate with a Master of Financial Engineering degree from the University of Johannesburg.

Abdulrazak, a former President of the Nigerian Students in Diaspora and South Africa, earned distinction for his groundbreaking thesis titled: Tailed Dependence Structure and Risk Spillover Among Proof of Stake and Proof of Work Cryptocurrencies.”
His research examined the complex interrelationships between major blockchain systems, offering fresh insights into risk management and the evolving field of decentralized finance.

His work is regarded as a significant contribution to the growing body of knowledge on digital asset modeling, a field that continues to reshape global financial systems.

Currently, Abdulrazak is advancing his academic career by pursuing a PhD in Economics at the University of Johannesburg.

His doctoral research, titled: Governance Structure and Risk Distribution Among Blockchain Consensus Mechanisms,” focuses on analyzing the systemic implications of different blockchain governance models such as Proof of Work, Proof of Stake, Delegated Proof of Stake, and hybrid structures.

Through his work, he aims to deepen understanding of how blockchain systems distribute risk and how their governance structures influence stability, scalability, and security—an area of increasing interest among policymakers, tech developers, and financial institutions.

During his tenure as President of the Nigerian Students in Diaspora and South Africa, he championed initiatives promoting student mentorship, leadership development, and stronger ties between Nigerian scholars and their host communities.

His historic achievement reflects the growing presence and impact of Nigerian intellectuals in the global academic arena. It also highlights the importance of encouraging Nigerian youth to pursue advanced studies in emerging and technology-driven fields.
