The Nigerian Army over the weekend launched an operation targeted at crude oil thieves and militants in some Bayelsa communities.
Multiple sources confirmed that troops of the Nigerian Army in gunboats raided Igbomotoru and Azuzuama in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, while another batch raided crude oil pipeline routes along with the Obama flow station, Kolo creeks, and Brass areas of the state.

Information from a senior military intelligence officer indicated that the operation was targeted at neutralizing militants setting up camps for illegal oil bunkering business.
According to him, a known militant leader who may have been tipped-off by his informants on the movement of the troops at the jetty used the many creeks around the area to escape.
The militant and his boys however left behind their shrine used for oath administering which was destroyed by the military and items such as military camouflage, mobile phones, and military boots among other items.

A source in the community said the initial fears over the presence of the military have been dispelled in Igbomotoru and Azuzuama.
The source confirmed that the situation in the communities is calm and said the troops have left the community and its environs.
