Nigerian football needs transformation – Taribo West

By Babs Oyetoro
Former Super Eagles defence ace, Taribo West, has declared that Nigerian football needs urgent reformation. He said nothing seems to be working within the system again.

Taribo, who has been critical of the style of football administration under the leadership of Amaju Pinnick, maintained that there is a need to re-engineer football administration for better result at all levels.

The former Inter Milan defence strongman noted that there is a need for men of proven character and with genuine intention to take over the running of our football.

He revealed that ex-internationals would mobilise for the reformation of Nigerian football administration, at least to save our football from extinction.

“Nothing is really working. We are not moving forward…Our teams are struggling to qualify for ordinary African championships. We saw how the U-20 Eagles were bundled out of AFCON qualifier in Togo. The Golden Eaglets managed to qualify for the African qualifier in Morocco. The Super Falcons could not qualify for the Olympics Games. It is so bad. All this is caused by poor administration of the sport,’’ he said.

Taribo added: “It is the same administration that could not pay players’ allowances after matches. Coaches too are being owed salaries. Honestly, we can’t continue like this. Something must be done now.”

The former Auxerre FC of France defender, however, commended the federation for the appointment of Austin Eguavoen as its technical director.
