Nigerians groan as NNPC increases fuel price

Many Nigerians have expressed worry over the increase in the pump price of petrol across the country, even as scarcity of the product persisted at filling stations on Tuesday.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited adjusted pump price at its stations, with the new price ranging from N858 to N950.

Most Nigerians have, however, disagreed with the decision of the government, calling for a reversal of the pump price.

An activist, Deji Adeyanju in a sarcastic post he made on Facebook said, “Congratulations to all Nigerians on the increment of fuel price to N855 by NNPC, especially members of the security agencies who are quick to arrest protesters demanding for a country that works for all.”

A Facebook influencer, Amanda Chisom wrote, “It is really funny how the same government asking people to crash the price of goods increased the price of their own goods and services! Brood of vipers.”

Another netizen, Emmanuel Theophilus, said, “Jagaban 😂 Some voltrons will still defend rubbish for peanuts that can’t buy 100 liters of fuel.”

For Aliyu Mohammed, “Dangote and NNPCL should be considerate in pricing. But why would NNPCL rush to increase the price of PMS even when it’s obvious that Dangote will sell in Naira denomination”

A journalist, Simbo Olorunfemi said, “With the exchange rate being the key factor in pricing, NNPC has no choice but to continue to serve as lead supplier and buffer.”

Constance Aserogun wrote, “This is called bullying of the highest order, just a few days back, some #EndBadGovernment protesters were arrested and today increment in petrol price. They are just saying you must not come out to protest the new price. It is well with Nigerians.”

Another netizen, Great Wison, laid a curse on supporters of the government saying, “If you know you campaigned against (Former President Goodluck) Jonathan when there was a little increment in fuel pump, and you are keeping quiet now when the price of fuel pump is above N950, may you never know peace in your life. Hypocrisy and tribalism is too much in this country. All of them have suddenly gone blind and deaf.”

Onuoha Ifeanyi wrote, “We will all suffer together, whether you are for APC, Labour Party or PDP, whether you’re Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and the rest, we will all buy that fuel ⛽️ same price. Let’s continue suffering and it doesn’t matter as long as the president is from my tribe I can bear the suffering. Nigeria is a country with mumu citizens and wicked leaders from the pit of hell 😳. Leaders that love seeing the citizens in pain.”

On his part, Sylvester Joseph said, “We are too afraid in this country I swear this nonsense is totally unacceptable in some very serious countries that know their civic rights, but tribe and religion have crippled the so-called democracy in this part of the world until we realise as a people to take the country by force from this very terrible set of people in respective of our political affiliations.”

However, one of the organisers of the #EndSARS protests, Segun Sega Awosanya, defended the increment saying, “You are paying more for fuel now than the pump price if you consider the cost of your man-hours spent on queues and other associated costs you may not see now.

“So even in the face of higher prices that guarantee consistent supplies, you win still and the economy does as well with logistics savings, accountability and transparency in domestic consumption and lower pressure on the demand for FX by 40%. 🇳🇬”
