NIN will soon become compulsory – Ibrahim

The Federal Government has announced that the National Identity Number (NIN) will soon be made compulsory for Nigerians especially those who need access to government services and interventions.

They made this known through the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy.

The Minister in charge of the ministry, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim, had received a briefing from the management team if the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). This is following the final transfer of the supervision of NIMC to the Ministry on 7th October.

Ibrahim urges the commission to increase its current monthly enrollments from 500,000 to 2.5 million. He commended the Director-General of NIMC, Engr Aliyu Aziz for his work but said that enrollments needed to increase monthly.

He said that this is because the NIN will soon be made mandatory for accessing government services and interventions. He also said that the NIMC team will do everything possible to address the challenges, especially funding, facing the commission.

The minister also stated his commitment to ensuring that citizens easily obtain a secure digital identity while urging that they should enrol soon.

“Digital Identity is one of the key requirements of any digital economy and it is captured under Pillar #6 of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) for a Digital Nigeria,” he concluded.
