No fewer than nine persons were rescued from a collapsed building in the Lifecamp area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja as an unspecified number were believed to have been trapped under the debris of the collapsed building.
The five-storey building under construction collapsed yesterday afternoon.
Emergency responders including officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have so far rescued nine of those trapped in the collapsed building whilst search and rescue are ongoing.
The building, it was learnt, collapsed around 4:00 pm yesterday while construction workers were carrying out their work.
The building, which was intended for hotel accommodation, reportedly gave way unexpectedly, trapping several workers who were on-site.
Eyewitnesses said the building collapsed during the casting work, shortly after the engineer had left the site.
Located in the swampy area of Dape near Berger Clinic, the building, according to eyewitnesses, allegedly collapsed as a result the usage of substandard materials.
Rescue operations are underway; however, it was slow because of lack of equipment at the scene of the collapse.
