NNPC denies allegations of fuel importation in 2025

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has strongly refuted reports alleging that it imported over 200 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in February 2025, dismissing the claims as “false, baseless, and a reckless misrepresentation of facts.”

In an official statement made available by Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer,  the company emphasised that it has not imported a single litre of PMS in 2025.

It described the report as either a result of “lazy and unprofessional journalism” or a “deliberate, sponsored attempt by economic saboteurs to mislead the public.”

NNPCL clarified that it does not control the import activities of private marketers nor issue import licenses, stating that attributing all PMS imports to the company is misleading and irresponsible.

“While NNPC Limited has not imported PMS in 2025, let it be clear that there is no legal restriction preventing us from doing so if necessary. As Nigeria’s foremost energy company, we have a duty to ensure energy security. Should any supply shortages arise, NNPC Limited retains the full right and responsibility to step in and import to stabilize the market,” the statement read.

The company also warned against misinformation, stating that false reports of this magnitude distort market realities and mislead key stakeholders. It vowed to take legal measures against those responsible for fabricating and spreading such claims.

NNPCL urged media organizations to uphold journalistic integrity by verifying facts before publication, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and its role in ensuring energy security for Nigerians.
