The NNPC Foundation has commissioned and handed over a fully installed 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, significantly boosting advanced diagnostic capabilities for millions in the South-East region and neighbouring Delta State.
The intervention, completed with comprehensive supporting infrastructure including RF shielding, chillers, backup UPS systems, electrical and ventilation setups, CCTV, and patient comfort features, addresses long-standing gaps in MRI access.
Before the installation, patients in the region often endured long waits, high costs, and lengthy travels to access functional MRI services.
The handover ceremony took place on Friday at the hospital’s permanent site for the Igwe Orizu ICT Centre.
According to a statement issued by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., the Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari (represented by NNPC Foundation Managing Director, Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe), described the project as a strategic investment in healthcare access, diagnostic precision, and sustainable national institutions.
“Access to quality healthcare underpins human dignity, longevity and economic productivity,” she said, quoting the GCEO. She added that the company views its social investments as vital in strengthening its core energy mandate and stakeholder relations.
Anambra State Governor Prof. Charles Soludo, represented by Commissioner for Health Dr Afam Obidike, welcomed the donation, saying it would enhance safe and precise diagnosis and treatment across the South-East. He commended NNPC Foundation for the timely intervention.
Executive Vice President, Business Services, Mrs Sophia Mbakwe (represented by Chief Supply Chain Officer Engr. Isokariari Telema) highlighted NNPC’s over 40 years of consistent contributions to infrastructure, education, and social amenities nationwide.
NAUTH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja, praised the initiative, noting it would eliminate the burden of long-distance travel and prohibitive costs for patients in the hospital’s catchment area. He assured full utilisation of the facility for public benefit.
The donation aligns with NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to equitable social investments and to strengthening critical national healthcare infrastructure.
