Rivers Assembly begins impeachment proceedings against Fubara, Deputy

The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally presented notices of allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Dr. Ngozi Odu.

Relying on Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and other extant laws, the Leader of the House, Major Jack, read the notice of allegations against the Governor during plenary, while the Deputy Leader, Linda Stewart, read the notice against the Deputy Governor.

According to the lawmakers, the allegations against both officials include failure to present the state budget to the House, spending public funds without legislative approval, and withholding salaries and statutory funds due to the Rivers State House of Assembly, the Office of the Clerk, and the Assembly Service Commission.

Other allegations listed in the notices include the screening and confirmation of government appointees by bodies other than the constitutionally recognised House of Assembly, as well as the demolition of the Assembly complex.

The 26 lawmakers sponsoring the notices alleged that the actions of the Governor and his Deputy amount to gross misconduct and demonstrate a lack of capacity to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the House assured that the notices of allegations would be served on the Governor and the Deputy Governor within seven days, in compliance with constitutional provisions.
