NNPC postpones Abuja conference over Ebola case

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has postponed its Contractors and Partners Chief Executive Officers’ Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Conference following the confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja.
The company announced the postponement in a brief statement posted on its social media platforms on Wednesday, saying the decision was a precautionary measure to protect participants.
The conference was scheduled to hold on October 21 and 22, 2026, in Abuja, with contractors, business partners and other stakeholders expected to attend.
“The health, safety and wellbeing of all participants remain our priority,” NNPC said, explaining its decision to suspend the event.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused by the postponement and thanked its partners, contractors, speakers and participants for their understanding.
It added that a new date for the conference would be announced in due course.
The decision comes a day after the Federal Government confirmed Nigeria’s first reported Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following laboratory tests on a woman who recently arrived in the country after travelling through Uganda. She had received treatment at a private hospital in Abuja before the infection was confirmed on Tuesday, October 20.
According to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the patient is in isolation and receiving medical care, while health authorities have begun contact tracing to prevent further spread of the virus.
The government said 44 contacts had been identified, including healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel contacts. Surveillance has also been intensified, with public and private health facilities urged to remain alert and promptly report suspected cases.
Nigeria’s latest case comes amid a wider regional outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 2026. Health authorities are working to identify possible exposures and strengthen measures to prevent further transmission.
