Ajaka apologises to Yahaya Bello, calls for peace and unity in Kogi

Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the November 2023 Kogi State governorship election, has apologised to former Governor Yahaya Bello over past political disagreements, calling for reconciliation, peace and unity in the state.

Ajaka made the appeal in a statement issued on Monday, saying it had become necessary to speak directly to the people of Kogi East after wide consultations.

He described the 2023 governorship contest as a defining moment in the state’s political history, noting that his ambition was driven by a desire to serve the people and promote a more inclusive, just and progressive Kogi State.

The former governorship candidate expressed gratitude to supporters, elders, youths, women and communities across the state who stood by him during the electioneering period.

He also paid tribute to supporters who lost their lives during the political struggle, praying for the repose of their souls and comfort for their families.

Ajaka, however, acknowledged that the heated political atmosphere at the time strained relationships and deepened divisions, especially the rift between him and Bello.

He said their disagreements were never personal but were shaped by the circumstances of the election and the passion for the causes they represented.

“In the overriding interest of peace, unity and the progress of our dear state, I believe it is both necessary and honourable to rise above the past,” he said.

“I extend a hand of understanding and goodwill, and where my actions or words may have caused offence, I profoundly apologise in the spirit of reconciliation.”

Ajaka said he had chosen to let go of all grievances and move forward without bitterness.

He urged political leaders and residents of the state to place the peace, stability and collective development of Kogi above personal ambitions and past conflicts.

According to him, the focus of all stakeholders must now shift from division to collaboration and from the past to the future.

Ajaka reaffirmed his commitment to the service of the people and the shared goal of building a stronger and more prosperous Kogi State.
