NUJ inaugurates committee to examine problems of media organisations

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi state chapter, on Monday inaugurated a five-man committee to examine the problems of state-owned media organizations in the state.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Umar Sa’idu, the state chairman of NUJ, said that the move was necessary due to the plethora of challenges facing the state-owned media organizations.

Sa’idu noted the present administration was doing much to address the problem, adding that the only way to assist was by bringing experts to provide suggestions to the government on how to tackle the problems.

He stated that the idea to form the committee was in line with the NUJ’s determination to enhance excellence in journalism practice in the state.

He said that the report would be forwarded to the state governor, Malam Bala Mohammed, upon submission by the committee.

“The state council of the NUJ has noticed that the state-owned media organizations are seriously facing a lot of challenges.

“We feel that the only way we can assist the present administration that is doing much to address these problems is by bringing experts in that aspect to provide suggestions to the government.

“We decided to set up this five-man committee to look at the challenges facing these organizations and what are the possible way out so that we’d forward them to the state government for necessary consideration.

“We believe that this report will definitely assist the government in coming to assist the media organizations in the state,” said the chairman.

Sa’idu explained further that members of the committee were selected based on their track records, professional and technical know-how.

Also speaking, the chairman of the committee, Mr. Inuwa Bello, who appreciated NUJ for finding them fit for the assignment, promised that the committee would discharge its responsibilities to the best of its capacity.

The members of the committee include Mr. Inuwa Bello, former Permanent Secretary, state Ministry of Information as of the chairman, and Mr. Umar Shira, a director in the Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC) as the secretary.

Others are Mr. Ibrahim Shall, former Managing Director Bauchi State Television (BATV); Mr. Dahiru Mohammed, former General Manager, Radio Nigeria, Globe FM Bauchi, and Fatima Abdullahi from the state Ministry of Information.

The state-owned media organizations to be looked into include Bauchi State Television (BATV) as well as Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC).
