Oluremi Tinubu renews call for home farming after harvesting vegetables at Villa

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to embrace home gardening as a practical way to improve food security after harvesting vegetables from her garden at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The harvest, carried out on Monday, was from the vegetable garden established about two years ago under the Every Home A Garden initiative, according to a post by the Nigerian Television Authority on its X account on Tuesday.

The garden yielded a variety of vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin.

After gathering the produce, the First Lady distributed part of the harvest to members of her staff, while encouraging Nigerians to cultivate the habit of sharing with others.

She reiterated that growing vegetables at home remains one of the ways families can supplement their food needs and contribute to the country’s food security efforts.

The vegetable garden was inaugurated at the Presidential Villa in July 2024 as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative, a programme designed to promote household farming amid rising food prices and concerns over access to affordable, nutritious food.

The initiative also introduced the Every Home A Garden competition, aimed at motivating women and families across the country to establish vegetable gardens within their homes.

At the unveiling of the project, Tinubu said the initiative was intended to demonstrate that even limited spaces around homes could be used to cultivate vegetables, helping households reduce food costs while improving access to healthy meals.

The latest harvest is part of the First Lady’s continued advocacy for home-based agriculture as a sustainable approach to boosting nutrition and strengthening food security across the country.
