The Nigerian music industry is shrouded in mourning following the untimely passing of Akin Shuga, a celebrated musician, and live performer who left an indelible mark on the nation’s entertainment scene.
Olusola Obasola, General Manager of Lyrics Nite Club, Ibadan, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late musician, reminiscing about their paths crossing at the club’s early days.
According to Obasola, Shuga’s love for music was a calling that went beyond mere passion.
“He dedicated himself to mastering his craft, learning the intricacies of harmony, and perfecting the art of live performance,” he said.
Obalola further said Shuga’s vision was clear: to bring elegance back to music and restore the pride of live bands in an era dominated by synthetic beats and digital noise.
With his band, Shuga, he achieved this vision, becoming a household name synonymous with class and distinction in Nigeria’s live entertainment industry.
Obasola vividly recalled the first time they honored Akin Shuga at Lyrics Nite Club in 2004, during the World Youth Day Celebration held at Trans Amusement Park.
Shuga received an award for Most Promising Musician in the South West, an honor that marked the beginning of his illustrious career. The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the then Deputy Governor of Oyo State, the late Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao Akala.
The late musician’s gratitude and humility were evident in his words, “Lyrics gave me my first major award. You saw me before the world saw me.”
These words capture the essence of Akin Shuga – a man who remained grateful, grounded, and genuine despite his rising fame.
As news of his passing spread, the music community was left in shock and grief. Obasola describes Shuga as a family member, someone who was celebrated and supported early in his career. “He was not just a performer that we once honored; he was a family,” Obasola said, highlighting the deep bond between Shuga and the Lyrics Nite Club community.
In a heartfelt tribute, Obasola celebrates Shuga’s life, legacy, and contributions to the music industry. “Thank you, Akin Shuga, for giving us beauty, rhythm, and grace. Thank you for carrying the torch of live music with dignity. Thank you for remembering where it all began with a small plaque, a big smile, and a heart full of dreams at Lyrics Nite Club, Ibadan,” he wrote. “May the Almighty grant you eternal rest. May your music live on forever in the rhythm of our memories.”
