Osimhen fires blank as Empoli dent Napoli’s Scudetto dream

By Francis Ajuonuma
Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen fired blank yesterday in Napoli’s shocked 3-2 defeat at Empoli.

The defeat is a huge setback for Napoli’s Scudetto title dream as it places Inter Milan and AC Milan to widen the gap on the Serie A table with four matches remaining.

With 34 matches played, Napoli are placed third on the table with 67 points, while Inter Milan and AC Milan have 72 and 71 points respectively from 33 matches.

Dries Merten fired Napoli ahead in the 44 after collecting a killer pass inside the box from Hirving Lozano. Napoli extended the lead in the second half with Lorenzo Insigne finding the back of the net in the 53rd after being put on goal by Andre Zambo Anguissa.

However, three goals in the last 10 minutes blew Napoli apart as they gave away the game cheaply.

Osimhen played all 90 minutes but was unfortunate not to be on the scorers’ sheet. The former Lille of France player came close to scoring in the 52nd minute but his effort flew over the bar.

Osimhen again had another opportunity to score in the 71 but was denied by an opposing player. Also in the 85th minute, Osimhen could have made it 3-2 for Napoli but was again denied by an Empoli player.
