Pa Akinkunmi’s family cries out over delay of burial plans

The family of the late designer of Nigeria’s national flag, Taiwo Akinkunmi, has blamed the Oyo state Government for delaying the burial plans of the elder statesman.

Pa Akinkunmi, who passed away on August 26, 2023, at the age of 84, is yet to receive a state burial as promised by the Oyo Government.

The family had initially fixed December 7 and 8, 2023, for the statesman’s burial.

However, a disagreement arose due to a lack of proper consultation between the family and the government.

The Oyo State House of Assembly then met with the family, promising to communicate an agreement on a new burial date.

Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, the spokesperson of the bereaved family, expressed their frustration over the lack of communication and uncertainty surrounding the burial arrangements.

The family is now seeking clarity on the commitments made by the government to enable them to determine whether to proceed with their burial plans for the late Pa Akinkunmi.

Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a civil servant, designed the Nigerian flag as the country prepared for independence from Britain in 1960.

In 2014, Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan, honoured him with the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).
