PDP cancels NEC meeting, cites ‘unforeseen circumstances

By Ben Ogbemudia
The call for the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu, to step aside is taking an overwhelming turn.

Yesterday, the leadership of the party postponed further meetings by its National Working Committee (NWC) and some members of the National Executive council (NEC).

Some of the NWC and Board of Trustees (BoT) members had yesterday advised that the proposed caucus and NEC meetings scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday this week should be postponed to avoid an ‘impeachment’ of the chairman.

A member of the NWC, who does not want his name in the print, said Ayu had not also helped matters in the whole crisis.

The NWC member said, “You see, my journalist, Dr Iyorchia Ayu’s role in this whole crisis showed that from day one, he had some bias against Governor Nyesom Wike. I can tell you that, if the NEC holds, Ayu will be history, because tension is still high. So, some of us advised that the meetings should be postponed till tension is down.”

But the PDP, in a notice yesterday, postponed the national executive council meeting billed to hold on Thursday till further notice.

Its National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, said a new date would be announced in due course, adding that all inconveniences were deeply regretted.

“This is to inform all members of the PDP National Caucus and National Executive Committee that the meetings of the two bodies earlier scheduled for Wednesday, August 10 and Thursday, August 11, 2022, respectively, have been postponed,” a statement said.

The secretary announced that the postponement was due to ‘unforeseen circumstances.

However, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Bode George, said there was a need for an urgent meeting with the elders of the party to resolve the lingering matters.

He said the party would be heading towards a disaster if all unsettled areas of concern were not resolved.

George, therefore, appealed for an immediate and all-embracing and sincere meeting.

“The only way we can confront our main opposition is to come together and resolve the problem confronting us right now,” he added.
