PDP kicks as APC sweeps Plateau LG poll

By Israel Joel, with agency report
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau has described Saturday’s local government election in the state as an appointment and rape of democracy.

The PDP state Publicity Secretary, Mr John Akans, made the declaration in Jos yesterday when he spoke.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the chairmanship and councillorship seats in the Plateau local government elections which held Saturday.

Chairman Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASEIC) Fabian Ntung, disclosed this when he announced the results on Sunday in Jos.

Ntung said that APC won all the 17 chairmanship and 325 councillorship seats at the elections, adding that seven political parties participated in the exercise.

According to him, “From the collated results from across all 17 local government areas, the APC candidates from Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Bokkos, Jo’s East, Jos South, Kanam, Kanke, Langtang North, Langtang South, Mangu, Mikang, Panshin, Qua’an Pan, Riyom, Shendam and Wase won all the seats and hereby stand elected.

“For the councillorship of the 325 electoral wards, the APC candidates cleared all the seats and hereby stand elected.”

The winners were issued the Certificates of Return immediately after the declaration of the results by Àri at the headquarters of PLASEIC in Jos.

However, reacting to the development, Akans, said what was done were not elections but selections and appointments of APC members.

He said that the party’s next line of action would be made known on Monday.
PLASIEC had earlier barred the PDP from participating in the elections citing a judgment some members of the party secured against the leadership of PDP in the state.

The PDP challenged its exclusion at the elections at the High Court and the Appeal Court but lost at both levels.

In his reaction, Mr Sati Bashir, APC’s State Secretary, said that it was not a smooth exercise for the party as the APC had challenges right from the commencement of the process.

He expressed happiness, however, that the process ended smoothly and his party was victorious.

“We are through with the elections and we are moving to the next level. The most important thing is that there hasn’t been any problem anywhere. There was no threat to peace in any part of the state and we are happy that all went well,” he said.
