PDP: Sule Lamido praises Wike’s leadership, urges reconciliation

A former governor of Jigawa State and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for what he described as his political shrewdness in addressing the leadership vacuum within the party.

Lamido said Wike demonstrated political tact by facilitating the establishment of a caretaker committee after the tenure of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) expired, noting that the move provided the only existing leadership structure at the time.

Speaking with journalists during a Ramadan Iftar with PDP executives and members in his hometown of Bamaina, Lamido said Wike recognised the situation early and acted decisively.

“Wike is very shrewd. He recognised the situation and established a caretaker committee, which became the only structure in place after the NWC’s tenure elapsed,” he said.

The former governor, however, called on leaders and members of the PDP to accept the caretaker arrangement and pursue reconciliation in order to avert further internal crises within the party.

He acknowledged that Wike’s role in the development might attract opposition from some party stakeholders but emphasised that engagement and dialogue were necessary for unity.

“Even if some of us oppose him politically, we must engage him in the spirit of brotherhood and PDP unity. Reconciliation is essential to move forward,” Lamido added.

Lamido warned that persistent internal conflicts and recent defections had unsettled loyal members of the party, stressing that resolving leadership disputes quickly was critical to the PDP’s survival and electoral preparedness.

He noted that prolonged disagreements could also hinder the party’s ability to comply with electoral law deadlines.

Reflecting on the significance of Ramadan, Lamido urged party stakeholders to embrace forgiveness and reconciliation as part of efforts to stabilise the party and strengthen its future.

“This holy month is a time for reflection and seeking peace. We must work together for the prosperity and security of Nigeria,” he said.

Lamido also stressed that the PDP remained a collective institution that belongs to all members and called on leaders to place the party’s legacy above personal interests.

He traced the party’s current crisis to disagreements among governors and other key political actors, adding that inclusive leadership and unity would be essential to restoring stability within the party.

“Our responsibility is to protect the PDP’s heritage and ensure it continues serving Nigerians,” he said, urging members to reconcile their differences and work together to strengthen the party.
