A Professor of the University of Calabar, Peter Ogban, has been jailed for three years by a High Court in Ikot Ekpene for announcing false election result during the 2019 general elections.

Ogban served as the returning officer in the senatorial election in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District in 2019.

According to the prosecutor, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Professor manipulated results from Oruk Anam and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom state.

INEC told the court that Peter Ogban falsified the results of the election to favour the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Godswill Akpabio against his main rival, the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, Chris Ekpenyong.

Earlier, Ogban had told the court how the results of the election were manipulated to give the APC a win over the PDP.
