By Cajetan Mmuta
It was joy and gratitude to God as no fewer than 3,000 persons in the Obeledu community in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra state on Tuesday were listed as beneficiaries from a three-day free medical outreach of the Okwuanyionu Foundation Center.

The people would also benefit from scholarships and skill acquisition programmes, including computer training under the Foundation.

Speaking during a flag-off ceremony of the programmes, the benefactor, Chief Josephat Okoye said the medical outreach was in commemoration of his 80th birthday celebration while the foundation was in memory of his late father, late Okoye.

He said the gesture was in appreciation of God’s benevolence upon his life and the community for the rare chieftaincy title bestowed on him.

“The President General of my town had approached me informing me of the community’s plans to bestow on me the highest title “Akaoma Jide Aku” no other person had and will ever be given.

“As I thought of what to do to my community in appreciation for such an honor, I remembered the needy and downtrodden and decided to set up a foundation for medicare, scholarship, and skill acquisition for them.” the octogenarian said.

Chairman of the Planning Committee, Chief Bar. Emeka Obegelu said the locals, including the elderly, youths, and children were being attended to by a team of medical experts led by Dr. John Obegolu from San Francisco, California, USA.

He said the benefactor had earlier visited orphanages and schools in the area where he spent time motivating the pupils through his life’s trajectory.

He said the foundation which would be commissioned by Governor Willie Obiano during the week would witness a monthly stipend for the indigent in the community under its poverty alleviation programme.

The traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Chijioke Oragwam appreciated the benefactor for the gesture, praying for longer life and sound health on him.

“You’ll agree with me that Onwa is not the only one in this community that had attained the age of 80. But he decided to be a blessing to his people. I call on others to emulate his footsteps,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Onyemesili Ngozi who was given free glasses over her virtual challenge was full of joy for the benevolence, praying for more blessings on the philanthropist.
