The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 22-year-old man accused of posing as a police officer after allegedly obtaining and wearing a stolen police camouflage uniform.
The command, in a statement shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, said the suspect allegedly took possession of a police officer’s bag containing a camouflage outfit, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card and other personal items before using the uniform to create a false identity.
According to the police, the suspect’s alleged attempt to pass himself off as a law enforcement officer was uncovered after members of the public noticed unusual behaviour and questioned his authenticity.
The command explained that the residents’ suspicion led to the discovery that the young man was not a genuine officer, after which he was handed over to the police for further investigation.
The suspect is currently being held in police custody, while detectives continue their investigation into the matter. The command said he would be prosecuted once the investigation is concluded.
Commending the residents for their alertness, the Lagos Police Command said the incident reflected the importance of public cooperation in crime prevention and highlighted the impact of its “See Something, Say Something” initiative.
The police, however, warned against mob action or jungle justice, reminding residents that every suspect has the right to due process under the law. The command urged members of the public to report suspicious individuals or activities to security agencies rather than taking matters into their own hands.
It further encouraged Lagos residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting law enforcement efforts by providing timely information that can help maintain peace and security across the state.
