Police begin 2027 election security preparations in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has begun preparations for the 2027 general elections, directing area commanders and divisional police officers to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance and patrols across Abuja.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, gave the directive during a meeting with senior officers to review security strategies ahead of the elections and end-of-year celebrations.

The command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.

Sanusi urged officers to identify crime-prone areas and conduct targeted raids to prevent emerging security threats, stressing the need for proactive policing across the territory.

He also directed officers to intensify efforts against armed robbery, kidnapping, car theft and other violent crimes during the coming months.

“As we approach the ember months and election period, I urge you to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering,” the commissioner said.

He called for strict compliance with electoral security guidelines to ensure a peaceful and orderly election, while warning officers to maintain professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights.

Sanusi also stressed the need for prompt responses to distress calls and sustained intelligence-led operations to prevent criminal activities.

Beyond election preparations, the police chief raised concerns about road construction projects in Abuja’s city centre, warning that they could worsen traffic congestion.

He directed the command’s traffic control departments and divisional traffic officers to improve traffic management and coordinate vehicular movement, particularly during peak periods.

The commissioner urged traffic personnel to remain courteous and professional while ensuring the free flow of vehicles on major roads.

He also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station.

Residents were advised to contact the command’s emergency lines on 08028940883 and 08032003913 to report security concerns.
