President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors to embark on viable projects that would improve the quality of life of citizens of their respective states thus warning them to desist from wasting states’ revenues on building unnecessary flyovers.
Tinubu gave this advice on Thursday when Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, paid him a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to him, instead of building flyovers, governors should channel state resources into constructing road networks that would improve the quality of life of citizens.
“Instead of flyovers where there is no significant traffic, they should build road networks to enhance the quality of life,” Tinubu said.
Extending roads into remote communities, he said, will boost economic activity and allow security agencies faster access when responding to emergencies.
The president argued that strategic infrastructure is indispensable as the country intensifies efforts to defeat terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes.
He, however, noted that monthly allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) have increased by four to five times.
Tinubu added that his administration has ended the era in which sub-national governments borrowed money to pay salaries and pensions.
“They are taking four to five times their previous allocations. Nobody is borrowing to pay salaries now,” he said.
It will be recalled that under this administration the three tiers of government in Nigeria received at least N53.3 trillion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) between March 2023 and May 2026.
