PRP accuses ex-members, officials of plot to destabilise party

The Peoples Redemption Party has alleged a plot by some former members and serving officials to destabilise its ranks, buy members’ loyalty and create a faction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party accused the unnamed individuals of attempting to undermine its grassroots support and weaken efforts to build a united opposition capable of challenging the ruling party.
The PRP National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the allegations in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, warning that those involved would face disciplinary action if they were serving party officials.
Baba-Ahmed alleged that the plotters were prepared to spend hundreds of millions of naira to influence party members and create divisions within the party.
However, the party did not identify those allegedly behind the scheme or provide evidence to substantiate the allegations in the statement.
The PRP chairman urged members and the public to resist what he described as attempts to hijack the party’s structures, particularly the unauthorised recruitment of polling agents.
“In particular, attempts to recruit polling agents for the party by persons with no authority to do so should be resisted. Huge amounts of money may be available to buy members’ support for opposition candidates by party officials. These efforts should be resisted and exposed,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He warned serving party officials allegedly involved in the scheme to withdraw from any attempt to establish a faction using party resources or their positions.
“The persons in the governing party involved in this scheme have been advised to steer clear of the PRP and distance themselves from attempts to create a faction with their party’s funds and their names. Serving officers of the Party involved in this scheme will face disciplinary measures,” he added.
Baba-Ahmed assured the party’s candidates and supporters that its leadership remained committed to protecting the organisation from internal divisions and preserving members’ confidence in its electoral platform.
He also reaffirmed the PRP’s determination to challenge the continuation of the current administration beyond 2027, saying the party would remain involved in efforts to build a viable opposition coalition.
The allegations come amid political realignments and negotiations among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties explore possible alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The PRP’s claims, if substantiated, could raise questions about internal party management, political funding and attempts to influence opposition structures ahead of the elections.
However, the allegations remain unverified, and the party’s statement did not name those accused or present evidence to independently establish the alleged plot.
