Rivers Court throws out suit seeking to sack 25 lawmakers over alleged defection

A suit seeking to sack the 25 lawmakers of Rivers State House of Assembly has been dismissed by a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.

THISNIGERIA recalls that the legislators were taken to court by Hycent Wosa-Amadi and three others for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Earlier, the court had declared the seats of the lawmakers vacant pending the determination of the suit brought before it.

However, in his ruling on Tuesday, the presiding judge, Justice Okogbule Gbasam, declared that Martin Amaewhule and the other lawmakers remain members of the PDP, stressing that the plaintiff failed to provide evidence of their defection.

The court ruled the official party record has not shown that the lawmakers had defected from the PDP to the APC, adding that media reports are not sufficient proof.
