Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has said that his government has so far spent about N26 billion to establish the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Rivers State University.

The governor, who disclosed this on Monday while flagging off the Emohua campus project of the Rivers State University, also disclosed that the abandoned campus of the Kenule Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic campus at Kira in Tai Local Government Area would be converted to a campus of the Rivers State University.

He said the conversion of the campus, which was originally built as a model secondary school, would complement the development programs of the government in the Ogoni area.

Wike lamented the high cost of running universities and said it was the major disincentive for establishing more universities in the state even though there was a yawning need to have more universities in the state.

The immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Ndowa Lale, who turned the sod of the Emohua campus, said the benefits of a multi-campus university were enormous. He listed the benefits to include increased carrying capacity, development of host communities, and increased chances of university education for the locals.
