Russia, Turkey say no decision on Taliban recognition made yet

Russia did not yet make any decisions on recognizing the Taliban (banned in Russia) as it is important to understand if they fulfill their promises, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu also said on Tuesday that his country was not in a rush to recognize the government of the Taliban.

The militant movement reportedly sent Russia, China, Turkey, Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan invitations to attend an event dedicated to the announcement of the new Afghan government.

But Peskov told reporters: “You know that so far no decisions have been made on the recognition of the Taliban.

“In addition, you also know that indeed we are very carefully monitoring everything that is happening there.
“And most importantly, we are still trying to understand how the promises of the Taliban, their statements, will correlate with their future actions.”

Turkey also believes the new Afghan government should unite different political forces and include women, according to Cavusoglu.

“Will Turkey recognize the Taliban? Let us not make hasty decisions.

“A government that can overcome the crisis and prevents an escalation into civil war should be formed.

“An inclusive government with the participation of all political forces and population stratum, including women, is needed.

“Global recognition of the Taliban requires the creation of such a government,” Cavusoglu said on air of Turkey’s NTV broadcaster.

The minister noted that all members of the new Afghan government that were presented to the world are in fact representatives of the Taliban.

“We are not going to form a government for them, but we communicate our ideas to the Taliban.

“We shall see and take it from there; we do not have a clear position on this issue yet,” Cavusoglu added.
