Senator representing Plateau South in the National assembly, Professor Nora Ladi Dadu’ut has felicitated with Nigerian women as they celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day.
Prof Nora in a statement made available to newsmen in Jos on Monday described women especially those from Plateau South as hardworking and a pillar to their families.
Our correspondent reports that International Women’s Day which is celebrated March 8 yearly, has the 2022 theme titled Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow.
The Senator said that “Advancing gender equality in the context of the climate crisis and disaster risk reduction is one of the greatest global challenges we face today.
It reads that ” The issues of climate change and environmental sustainability have had severe and lasting impacts on our environment, economic and social development.”.
“Those who are among the most vulnerable and marginalized experience the deepest impacts, Unfortunately, women are increasingly being recognized as more vulnerable to climate change impacts than men, as they constitute the majority of the world poor and are more dependent on the natural resources which climate change threatens.
She added that despite the disadvantage of being most vulnerable and marginalized, women are effective and powerful leaders and change-makers for climate adaptation and mitigation.
“They are involved in sustainability initiatives around the world, and their participation and leadership result in more effective and sustainable climate action.”
The Senator who further said “Women play indispensable roles in private and public lives and deserve full support and respect of society for those roles said the international Women’s Day 2022 with the theme: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, is aimed at recognizing and celebrating the contribution of women and girls around the world who are leading the change on climate change adaptation, mitigation, sustainable urban-rural planning and design, decarbonization of built environment and climate-related governance, to build a more sustainable future for us all.
“To sustain our tomorrow, women as agents of social and economic growth should be seen as equal in nation-building with their male counterparts. There is no tomorrow without women who have proven to be builders of our nation. ”
Senator Daduut further added that ” Women are the most powerful tool of political advancement in our Country because of their demographic strength. “They are resilient and persevering in attaining and sustaining the livelihood of their homes. This explains why women today must be included in governance, education, agriculture, and politics.
Very often, the world ignores these extra values of resilience and perseverance possessed by women and puts them (women) in vulnerable and disadvantaged conditions.
Why do we celebrate International Women’s Day? – It is historic, it advances women’s participation in all spheres of endeavors, it opens and breaks the cultural and even religious phenomena in certain parts of the world that seem to deter women’s inputs and contributions to society. It creates solidarity of purpose for the good of our society, she stressed.

Daduut added that “Equality today between the male and female gender entails access to education, social and political participation, economic independence, etc. Sustaining these values can only be achieved by breaking the bars and setting the woman free to play her supporting roles. “Since women have been sustaining the livelihood of their homes from time immemorial if, given the opportunity, they can equally apply those skills on a larger scale for nation-building towards a sustainable tomorrow.
She stressed that she and other members of the National Assembly would always promote and defend the rights and interests of the Nigerian women and fight anything that stood against their wellbeing and aspirations.
Prof Nora who has always been an advocate for women to participate in politics said “Women deserve more opportunities in politics “.
“Our women also deserve support and encouragement to participate without discrimination in governance and public affairs in general.
Professor Nora further stressed that she would work to promote and defend the rights and interests of the Nigerian women and fight anything that would stand against their wellbeing and aspirations while in the senate.
