The Hawkins Deck of the National Association of Seadogs in Lagos State,  has joined the global community to mark World Health Day 2026 with a call for stronger scientific collaboration to improve healthcare access and equity in Nigeria.
Speaking as part of activities commemorating the global health campaign themed “Together for Science,” the group emphasized the need for evidence-based policies and innovation to address persistent gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved rural communities.
“It’s April 7th, World Health Day. National Association of Seadogs Hawkins Deck is joining the global movement to celebrate this year’s theme as ‘Together for Science,’” said Nkem Ekwen, Capn of Hawkins Deck.
According to him, scientific collaboration remains critical to improving health outcomes and ensuring equitable access to medical services across communities.
“We’re amplifying the call for scientific collaboration to drive health equity in Nigeria. Rural communities are counting on us to bridge gaps in healthcare access and innovation,” Ekwen said.
The group noted that community-based initiatives and partnerships are essential in promoting policies rooted in research, data and innovation, stressing that science remains central to solving emerging public health challenges.
“Through community-driven initiatives and partnerships, we’re pushing for science-informed health policies and solutions,” he added.
World Health Day is observed annually on April 7 to highlight pressing global health issues and mobilise collective action toward improved wellbeing.
The 2026 campaign encouraged governments, organisations and citizens to rely on evidence-based solutions and collaborative research to tackle health threats affecting people and the environment.
The association, therefore, called on stakeholders, policymakers and the public to support initiatives that promote scientific research and innovation as pathways to achieving universal health coverage and sustainable healthcare systems.
“Join the movement. Let’s make health equity a reality, together,” Ekwen urged.
