The Senate has denied recent media reports suggesting a discord between the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.
The alleged disagreement reportedly took place during a recent executive session convened to discuss the timing of the Senate’s annual recess.
However, these claims have been categorically dismissed as unfounded by the Senate.
In a statement released on Sunday, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, described the reports as misleading and inaccurate.
He emphasised that such narratives distort the nature of parliamentary deliberations and the long-established traditions governing legislative practices in Nigeria and other democracies worldwide.
As Nigeria’s highest legislative chamber, the Senate plays a pivotal role in shaping national policies affecting over 230 million Nigerians.
Rigorous debates, oversight functions, and collaborative efforts among lawmakers mark its operations.
Senator Adaramodu explained that spirited discussions and varying viewpoints are an essential part of the legislative process.
He said, “Robust debate and thorough scrutiny are hallmarks of a vibrant democracy. Every initiative brought before the Senate undergoes detailed examination in both plenary and committee sessions. This process ensures lawmakers fully assess the implications before approving any legislation.”
He further clarified that such intense discussions should never be misconstrued as personal conflicts or leadership disunity.
He said, “It is important for the public and media to understand that vigorous discussions are part of parliamentary procedure and do not indicate any discord within the Senate leadership.”
The recent media reports claimed that a heated confrontation took place between Akpabio and Bamidele over the Senate’s recess schedule, portraying a divided leadership.
However, Adaramodu rejected these allegations outright, affirming that no such clash occurred.
Instead, he said that the executive session was a routine meeting where members debated the timing of the recess. This issue naturally generates differing opinions due to its impact on legislative activities and governance.
He said, “Executive sessions are confidential platforms where Senate leaders discuss sensitive matters. Constructive disagreements in such settings are normal and aimed at reaching consensus. These should not be misread as evidence of internal strife.”
He stressed that the Senate operates under established parliamentary traditions that uphold transparency, accountability, and respect for diverse opinions.
The Senate spokesperson said, “In democracies worldwide, vigorous debate among lawmakers is common and vital for sound policy development.
“This reflects a healthy democracy where elected representatives thoroughly debate issues before making decisions affecting citizens,” he noted.
Adaramodu also appealed to the media to report on parliamentary affairs responsibly.
“We urge the press to verify facts and provide balanced coverage that reflects the realities of legislative processes rather than sensationalising routine debates,” he said.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to unity and integrity in serving the Nigerian people.
Part of the statement read, “Our leadership remains dedicated to collaboratively addressing national challenges through effective legislation and oversight.
“The Senate stands united in its resolve to promote the welfare of all Nigerians,” Adaramodu said.
He called on stakeholders, including the media, civil society, and citizens, to support the Senate’s constitutional role by appreciating the complexities of legislative work and avoiding misinterpretations that could undermine public confidence.
