Should FG rehabilitate refineries before privatising them?

I don’t think it is a nice idea for the government to use such an amount for the refineries, because the country is in huge debt. The government, both past, and present has pumped a lot of money for the same venture without any reasonable outcome- not a penny was recorded as profit. For that reason, doing another renovation would be counter-productive.

Please which refineries are we talking about here? You know we Nigerians just have a way of exploiting money. Even if they were to spend money on those refineries before privatizing them, that amount is just too much. Why spend so much money on it if you want to privatize them?

But if the refineries are to pay some percentage afterward, then it’s a great idea, but spending that amount is unless. They should reduce it.

The refineries will also provide job opportunities one way or the other, but it is not advisable to spend much money. In our current situation, I don’t think Nigerians should spend more, rather we should look for how to generate revenue.

There is nothing wrong with it if the money is spent the right way. The main thing is for us to achieve the purpose for which the money was used. Even if they use $3 billion, it doesn’t matter as long as the goal is achieved.

But the problem is, this will not be achieved, the money will be hijacked by some members of the government and they will start telling us stories. Once the money is allocated to a particular project, let them try their best to do it.

This money we are talking about, Nigeria is bigger than it, some people have some money like that. Nigeria is a rich country, but some people will hijack this money for their selfish interests, which is why we are not moving forward.

No, I don’t think using such a huge amount of money is a good idea if the aim is to sell it. I don’t think they should spend much money on rehabilitating it. This is because they will only have a means of sharing the money again without doing that which is expected.

Why should they spend such an amount of money if they want to privatize it? What is their goal, the government should be transparent with such a project.

When they are transparent, citizens will not have anything to say or complain about what the money was used for. I think they should go back to review such expenditure because right now, Nigeria is not a place where money should be squandered. We still have a lot to cover and a very long way to go.

Nigeria should at this stage, prioritize what money should be spent on and not delegate money anyhow on projects. We should try to use the available resource for us to rise on our feet.

This particular government lacks an economic team, so everything is not logical at all. The Federal Government would need to have some percentage of profit that it will be gaining as a shareholder after privatizing the refineries, otherwise, the government needs to seek economic advice on the way forward.

They are just taking decisions anyhow without consulting with professionals.

Right now Nigeria needs help and we need people to invest, foreign investors but until we stop all this and keep a good record before we can have any serious investor.

What have you just said? Privatize what. All the privatization they did In the past, what dividend have they yielded? I don’t think it is a nice idea for the government to use such an amount for the refineries, because the country is in huge debt.

If we are not careful in this country, we will just wake up one day to discover that they had mortgaged all of us.

Whatever is their consideration, we are saying, p-l-e-a-s-e fix the refineries and stop unnecessary hiking of pump prices.

They will be doing good if they spend the money wisely. The main problem about this country is the menace of corruption.

We have been hearing of all sorts of a turnaround for ages, yet they are yet to achieve something tangible by way of the turnaround of the refineries.

The money they are wagering $3 billion, is not chicken money. Fate will not spare them if they mess around on the issue of refinery maintenance again.

It does not, however, mean that we are saying that the best could still come out of our refineries. But it is only if they are willing to put things right. There must be transparency and accountability in the whole exercise.
