South Africa’s anti-apartheid icon, Archbishop Desmond Tutu dies

South African Nobel Peace prize laureate and anti-apatheid icon,  Archbishop Desmond Tutu has died at the age of 90.

The country’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed Tutu’s passing via Twitter on Sunday, December 26th.

“The passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa.

“Desmond Tutu was a patriot without equal; a leader of principle and pragmatism who gave meaning to the biblical insight that faith without works is dead.

“We pray that Archbishop Tutu’s soul will rest in peace but that his spirit will stand sentry over the future of our nation,” Ramaphosa tweeted.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu OMSG CH was a South African Anglican cleric and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist.

He was the Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then the Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, in both cases being the first black African to hold the position.
