Southern Parkway service lanes will ease Abuja traffic, transform corridor – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that the construction of the Southern Parkway service carriageways will ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity and accelerate development across Abuja’s southern corridor.

Represented by the National Chairman of the APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, during the official flag-off of the project in Gaduwa on Tuesday, the President described the initiative as a key component of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and infrastructure development programme.

He noted that the Southern Parkway remains one of the most strategic routes in the Abuja0 Master Plan, linking several districts within the capital city.

Tinubu explained that the existing main carriageway, now known as Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, had already been completed, while the new service lanes would address growing traffic challenges in districts such as Durumi, Gudu, Gaduwa and adjoining mass housing estates.

According to him, the project would reduce travel time, lower transportation costs and improve access for residents and businesses.

The President also highlighted other infrastructure projects being undertaken in the FCT, including the N20 and N16 road corridors, as well as ongoing road developments in Kuje, Gwagwalada and Mabushi.

He commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for reviving abandoned projects and delivering critical infrastructure across the territory.

Speaking at the event, Wike dismissed concerns that political activities ahead of the 2027 elections could slow infrastructure delivery, insisting that the administration would continue implementing projects in line with President Tinubu’s directives.

He expressed confidence that Abuja’s landscape would be significantly transformed before the end of the President’s first term.

The minister disclosed that he had received assurances from the contractor, CGC Nigeria Limited, that the project would be delivered on schedule, provided funding obligations were met.

He said the administration hopes to commission the road before the 2027 election period.

Wike also warned against illegal developments and land encroachment along the project corridor, directing relevant agencies to remove structures erected on unapproved land in order to protect the Abuja Master Plan.

Earlier, Acting Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, said the project involves the construction of about three kilometres of dual service roads, two river bridges, drainage facilities, culverts and street lighting.

He noted that the completed project would significantly reduce traffic congestion along major routes serving Durumi, Gudu, Gaduwa and Duboyi districts.
