Sowore kicks against extension of Kemi Nandap’s tenure as NIS CG

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Nigeria’s last election, has opposed the extension of the tenure of Kemi Nandap as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

Recall that President Bola Tinubu had earlier announced the extension of Nandap’s tenure who joined the NIS on October 9, 1989, and was appointed as Comptroller-General on March 1, 2024, with an initial tenure set to end on August 31, 2025.

A statement by the president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, said Tinubu commended Nandap for her leadership, noting improvements in border management, immigration modernisation, and national security under her watch.

Reacting to the extension, Sowore, in a post made on his social media page claimed that Tinubu is using his office as the president to reward incompetent civil servants who refuse to relinquish their positions after attaining retirement age.

He accused the NIS boss of placing Tinubu opponents on the national watchlist at airports and border posts across Nigeria during the #EndBadGovernance protest.

He wrote, “This situation is intolerable. Under Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s governance, the practice of rewarding incompetent and long-serving civil servants who refuse to relinquish their positions after attaining retirement age has become obstinately prevalent, thereby obstructing the career progression of others who are either mandatorily retired or coerced out of their roles by these recalcitrant officials.

“This Nigeria immigration service, CG Kemi Nandap, who started placing Tinubu opponents on the national watchlist at airports and border posts across Nigeria during #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests last August 2024, just as Kayode Egbetokun as IGP of @Nigeria Police Force was murdering protesters and charging minors for treason. #EgbetokunMustGo #KemiNandapMustGo #RevolutionNow”
